MWM: Motif Window Manager

Motif’s window manager, including the maintained Motif forks that carry it.

Role: Motif window manager. mwm manages top-level X windows, their frames, menus and placement. It ships in the Motif source tree, separately from libXm. A Motif application can run under another window manager, and MWM can manage applications written with other toolkits.

The screenshots in our Xt examples use MWM for their title bars and borders. The controls inside each window still belong to the application’s own widget set.

Maintenance and source

MWM’s maintenance follows the particular Motif tree you use. The original SourceForge distribution and the maintained forks are distinct sources; their changes and release schedules should not be conflated.

Tim Tentenaar’s Motif fork explicitly aims to continue maintaining Motif and incorporates fixes and additional work.

The EMWM project’s resource links also identify these forks as options for maintained Motif sources.

MWM lives under clients/mwm in the Motif tree. Its mwm and mwmrc manual pages explain resources, menus and bindings. To study a separately developed extension of MWM, see EMWM.
